I just love the show. And when I was watching it on PBS (Sunday night, 9pm EST. \u00a0The last time I watched Sherlock Holmes was the Granada series with Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke… sigh!), I along with a number of other fans who were all sharing a stream on Twitter (#sherlock_pbs), noticed some cuts in the PBS showing. Not just one episode, but all three. Soemtimes it was no biggie, but other times it was leaving out some important information. So much that I spent some time taking notes on the differences Not just seeing, but observing (haha, little Sherlockian humor there).<\/p>\n

While PBS just finished re-airing the first season, they still have it online for the rest of this month<\/a>. And there might be some of you out there who have it recorded.<\/p>\n

Below are the differences that I caught. There’s bound to be some edits that I overlooked, but I thikn I got most of them, including some major gaps that PBS left out.<\/p>\n

Just to say, I love PBS. Have for years. \u00a0There’s just some things that they do that do not make sense.<\/p>\n

Am I over doing it? Maybe, but then again I love this show (and Sherlock Holmes stuff in general). \u00a0It was mostly a fun little project for me.<\/p>\n

WARNING!!! Spoilers!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

If you haven’t seen it, the killer, and his modus operandi, are revealed at the end. \u00a0You have been\u00a0warned.
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

A Study in Pink<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u00a0\u00a0Below is the end of the intro as it was\/is seen on the BBC<\/p>\n

While the rest of the cuts don\u2019t affect the US\u2019s release of the Sherlock DVD nor the Netflix streaming version, this one change still exists.<\/p>\n

\"PBS-intro4\"<\/a><\/p>\n

John investigates Sherlock<\/strong><\/p>\n

After Sherlock and Watson\u2019s meeting, shot of the Millenium wheel, then to John in his apartment. He sits on his bed and pulls out his phone. Looks at the message that Sherlock had sent earlier:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf brother has green ladder arrest brother. \u00a0SH\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0\"John-Sent-messages-Sherlock3\"<\/a><\/p>\n

then goes over to his laptop and does a search for Sherlock Holmes:<\/p>\n

Importance —<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Somewhat. \u00a0It makes a little more sense when John tells Sherlock the next day “I looked you up on the internet last night.” when they meet at 221B.<\/p>\n

Sherlock and John leave for Lauriston Gardens<\/strong><\/p>\n

A few seconds of Sherlock and John leaving 221b by cab as it stops at the intersection.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Importance —<\/strong><\/em> Minor. Just a couple more seconds more after John closes the cab door.<\/p>\n

Meeting Donovan<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sherlock meets up with Donovan. After Sherlock\u2019s line of commenting that he knew she did not come home the night before, she stops him and points to John.<\/p>\n

Donovan: Who’s this?<\/p>\n

Sherlock: Colleague of mine, Dr. Watson. Dr. Watson, Sally Donovan. An old friend.<\/p>\n

\"Watson-and-Donovan2\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Donovan: Colleague? How do you<\/em> get a colleague?<\/p>\n

\"how-do-you-get-a-colleague2\"<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

[Turns and asks John] Donovan: Did he follow you home?<\/p>\n

John [to Sherlock] \u201cWould it be better if I just waited…?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sherlock [sherpily]: No [He lifts up the crime scene tape over John\u2019s head.]<\/p>\n

Donovan: Freak’s here. Bringing him in.<\/p>\n

Importance —<\/em><\/strong> Somewhat. Gives more of an introduction to Sgt. Donovan.<\/p>\n

Meeting with\u00a0<\/strong>Lestrade<\/strong><\/p>\n

After Sherlock heavily implies that Donovan and Anderson of having an affair, he and John enter the building.<\/p>\n

They go through a couple rooms to meet with Lestrade.<\/p>\n

Sherlock [pointing to a lab suit to John]: You should wear one of these.<\/p>\n

Lestrade [to Sherlock, seeing John]: Who\u2019s he?<\/p>\n

Sherlock: He\u2019s with me<\/p>\n

Lestrade: But who is he?<\/p>\n

Sherlock: I said he\u2019s with me.<\/p>\n

\"Hes-with-me1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

John [holding a suit, to Sherlock] \u201c\u00a0Aren’t\u00a0you going to put one on?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sherlock doesn\u2019t answer, just looks at John with a \u201cI don\u2019t do that\u201d look on his face.<\/p>\n

Sherlock [to Lestrade]: So where are we?<\/p>\n

Lestrade:\u00a0Upstairs.<\/p>\n

\"upstairs1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI can give you two minutes\u201d says Lestrade as he leads Sherlock and John up the stairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cMay need longer\u201d says Sherlock.<\/p>\n

Importance —<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Somewhat. Sets more of a tone to the type of person Sherlock is: \u00a0He follows his own rules.<\/p>\n

John leaving the crime scene<\/strong><\/p>\n

After Sherlock says the serial killer\u2019s mistake was \u201cPINK!\u201d, the police got to finishing up the crime scene. John hobbles down the stairs.<\/p>\n

and out to where he came in near Sgt. Donovan.<\/p>\n

Importance —<\/em><\/strong> Minor. \u00a0It does show that he loses Sherlock totally as Sherlock had already ran off without waiting for him.<\/p>\n

John finally arrives home after a detour<\/strong><\/p>\n

John gets out of the car after meeting the mysterious man in the warehouse, and goes to knock on the 221B door\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Importance —<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 Minor. \u00a0Though it’s always good to see more of John \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Sherlock and John head towards Northumberland Street<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sherlock and John leave 221B and go by foot to Northumberland street. Sherlock thinks aloud as to who the killer could be:<\/p>\n

John: Where are we going?<\/p>\n

Sherlock: Northumberland Street\u2019s a five minute walk from here.<\/p>\n

John: You think he\u2019s stupid enough to go there?<\/p>\n

Sherlock: No, I think he\u2019s brilliant enough. I love the brillant ones. They\u2019re all so desperate to get caught.<\/p>\n

John: Why?<\/p>\n

Sherlock. Appreciation! Applause! At long last the spotlight. That\u2019s the frailty of genius, John, it needs an audience.<\/p>\n

John: Yeah<\/p>\n

Sherlock: This is his hunting ground. Right here in the heart of the city. Now that we know that his victims were abducted, that changes everything. Because all of his victims disappeared from busy streets, crowded places, but nobody saw them go. Think! Who do we trust, even though we don\u2019t know them? Who passes unnoticed wherever they go? Who hunts in the middle of a crowd?<\/p>\n

John: Don\u2019t know. Who?<\/p>\n

\"Sherlock-and-John-to-Northunblerand31\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Sherlock: Haven\u2019t the faintest. Hungry?<\/p>\n

Then they enter the restaurant.<\/p>\n

Importance —<\/em><\/strong> Important. \u00a0Sherlock ask key questions about the type of person they are looking for.<\/p>\n

Flashback audio<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Baker Street, Sherlock, John, Lestrade and the Scotland Yard crew discover the pink phone is with them…somewhere. Sherlock then flashes back to his earlier questions.<\/p>\n

This is a different kind of edit. While the video isn\u2019t cut, there\u2019s audio that is missing. Sherlock\u2019s above questions are repeated.<\/p>\n

Importance —<\/strong><\/em> Important. \u00a0For the same reasons as above. \u00a0Of course, they had to cut out Sherlock’s flashback audio because they had cut out that previous scene.<\/p>\n

Sherlock leaving with the Cabbie<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sherlock exits the cab and follows the cabbie’s lead to one of the buildings.<\/p>\n

\"Sherlock-walks-out-of-cab1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Back at 221B, John is about to walk out the door, realizes he doesn\u2019t have his cane and goes back to get it. \u00a0And then the computer beeps that the pink phone’s GPS was connecting again.<\/p>\n

Importance –<\/strong> Minor. \u00a0For John, it shows that he was still relying on his crutch even though Sherlock had already proved to him he didn’t need it.<\/p>\n

Sherlock and Cabbie enter a classroom<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cabbie – So what do you think? It\u2019s up to you. You\u2019re the one who\u2019s going to die here.<\/p>\n

\"Its-up-to-you1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Sherlock: No, I\u2019m not.<\/p>\n

Cabbie: That\u2019s what they all say. Shall we talk?<\/p>\n

Importance —<\/strong><\/em> Minor. \u00a0Does show off more of Sherlock’s confidence. \u00a0Never can have too much of Sherlock!<\/p>\n

\u00a0The real reason why the Cabbie is killing random people<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cabbie: I\u2019ve outlived four people. That\u2019s the most fun you can have with an aneurism.<\/p>\n

Sherlock: No… No, there\u2019s something else. You didn\u2019t just kill four people because you\u2019re bitter. Bitterness is a paralytic. Love is a much more vicious motivator. Somehow, this is about your children.<\/p>\n

\"about-your-kids\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Cabbie: Oh…You are good, aren\u2019t you?<\/p>\n

Sherlock: But how?<\/p>\n

Cabbie: When I die, they won\u2019t get much, my kids. Not a lot of money in driving cabs.<\/p>\n

Sherlock: Or serial killing.<\/p>\n

Cabbie: You\u2019d be surprised.<\/p>\n

Sherlock: Surprise me.<\/p>\n

Cabbie: I have a sponsor.<\/p>\n

Sherlock: You have a what?<\/p>\n

Cabbie: For every life I take, money goes to my kids. The more I kill… the better oof they\u2019ll be. You see? It\u2019s nicer than you think.<\/p>\n

Sherlock: Who\u2019d sponsor a serial killer?<\/p>\n

Cabbie: Who\u2019d be a fan of Sherlock Holmes? You\u2019re not the only one to enjoy a good murder. There\u2019s others out there just like you, except you\u2019re just a man. And they\u2019re so much more than that.<\/p>\n

Sherlock: What do you mean… more than a man? An organization… what?<\/p>\n

Cabbie: There\u2019s a name that no-one says. And I\u2019m not going to say it either. Now enough chatter.<\/p>\n

Imporatnace —<\/strong><\/em> Very! \u00a0It explains why the cabbie was murdering the other people. \u00a0And how the Cabbie knows of (shhh!) Moriarty.<\/p>\n

John looks for Sherlock<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cabbie: Shall we?<\/p>\n

Cabbie [with shots of John running down the hallway looking frantically for Sherlock]: So what do you think? Can you beat me? Are you clever enough…to bet your life.<\/p>\n

\"What-do-you-think1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Imporatnace –<\/strong><\/em> Somewhat. \u00a0The Cabbie continues to play mind games with Sherlock. \u00a0And like I said earlier, you can’t have too much of Sherlock… or John :).<\/p>\n

After the cabbie gets shot<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sound effect of Sherlock throwing the pill on the floor is cut out.<\/p>\n

Sherlock: Ok… tell me this. Your sponsor. Who was it?<\/p>\n

\"your-sponsor1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Importance<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0—<\/strong><\/em> Fairly. \u00a0As like Sherlock’s questions, this was also cut out because they had cut out the cabbie talking about his sponsor.<\/p>\n

That’s it! \u00a0Or at least, the ones I caught. \u00a0There might be others. \u00a0I did not realize until the last one, “Hey! There’s a\u00a0sound\u00a0missing!”. \u00a0So there might be other little bits omitted for whatever reason. \u00a0It was fun, and a good thing I love the show so much other wise it might have driven me a little crazy. Especailly getting the right screenshots without them being blurry or the lighting being bad for that split second and you can’t tell what you are looking at.<\/p>\n

It also took over a year to do this since I didn’t record it from PBS but rewatched their version live during the broadcast as well as online. \u00a0Once they took it down near the end of December 2010, I had nothing to go on, until they rebroadcast it earlier this year. \u00a0This episode is online at PBS’s site until March 1, 2012.<\/p>\n\n
